One of the best-kept secrets about living in Lexington is that you're closer to world-famous bourbon than almost anywhere else on earth, and most visitors don't realize how easy a day trip it actually is until they've done it once.

Why Lexington Is Bourbon Basecamp

Lexington sits more or less in the middle of bourbon country, which means the region's best-known distilleries are all a short, scenic drive away rather than an all-day expedition. That's different from Louisville or Bardstown, where you're driving well out of town to reach the same names.

The Big Four Near Lexington

•      Woodford Reserve — about 21 miles, roughly 30 minutes, in the rolling horse country outside Versailles.

•      Wild Turkey — about 22 miles, 30-45 minutes, overlooking the Kentucky River.

•      Four Roses — about 24 miles, 30-45 minutes, in a Spanish mission-style distillery that looks nothing like its neighbors.

•      Buffalo Trace — about 26 miles, closer to 45 minutes, in Frankfort.

All four sit within about 15-20 minutes of each other once you're out that way, which is why a lot of visitors try to knock out three in one day. Our honest local opinion: pick two, maybe three, and actually enjoy the tour and tasting instead of racing the clock between parking lots.

Planning a One-Day Loop

A comfortable loop starts with Woodford Reserve in the morning, since it's the most photographed distillery in the state and worth the extra time, then Four Roses or Wild Turkey after lunch. Buffalo Trace, being the furthest out toward Frankfort, pairs better as its own half-day trip than as a fourth stop tacked onto a long day.

The Kentucky Bourbon Trail

The Kentucky Bourbon Trail is the official program tying the state's major distilleries together, run by the Kentucky Distillers' Association. The older paper passport program has since been retired, so check each distillery's own site directly for current tour and tasting options rather than looking for a stamp book — the trail concept, and the distilleries themselves, are still very much open for business.

Getting There Without Worrying About Mileage

Bourbon country day trips add up in miles faster than people expect, especially bouncing between three or four stops. A lot of our guests find a compact SUV handles the rolling back roads out toward Versailles and Frankfort more comfortably than a low sedan, especially if you're driving after dark.

A Few Local Notes

•      Designate a driver, or split the tastings among your group — tours involve real pours, not sips.

•      Purchase tickets and reserve your tours and tastings ahead of time. Slots fill fast and you will be disappointed if you wait till you arrive in Lexington. Call ahead in October; fall is bourbon country's busiest season thanks to the weather and harvest events.

•      Wear real shoes — distillery floors are often uneven brick or gravel, not sidewalk.

•      Pair it with a morning at Keeneland or an afternoon of horse farm touring — the same back roads connect all three.
